April 16, 2009  Issue 5

From
The Editor

 Debi K

We can't believe how fast two weeks goes by. It seems I no sooner finish one issue and I'm into the next issue. Actually, I've already started the April 30th issue. There's just so much information out there. It is keeping me extremely busy, but we're loving every minute of it - especially when we receive so many great comments from everyone about this newsletter and the website.

Our first survey gave us great insight into what people are doing with their horses. The
results are now posted on the website for your perusual. The one thing that stands out is how many of you are looking for a big equine facility to host major events and be available for renting for local functions etc. We're sure if the town of Clinton can accommodate such a facility in REACH, that we in Niagara could certainly do it.

The
Equine Niagara News Facebook Group has now reached 250 members and growing. The fan page is up to 74 members - we have yet to figure out the difference between group pages and fan pages. They both seem to do much of the same thing, but then again you can do some things on the group page that you can't do on the fan page and vice versa. So we have both. Check them out.

We are also now on
twitter.com. Follow our tweets by looking us up under EquineNiagara. We are gaining quite the following there as well - worldwide. Some of the unique products in the A "Bit" About section were found because of people following us on twitter. It's interesting that those tweeters are actually using some of my headlines to talk about to their followers.

Our overall website stats are increasing rapidly. We saw a 40% growth across the board in hits and visitors to the site in a one month period. That's amazing!

New in the classifieds this month - we've added an "Employment Opportunities" category for those searching for work and those having jobs available - please add to it - the jobs do not have to be equine related. We want all riders working to afford all those lovely horses out there.

This month we've also added a sales rep to the team. Welcome Meaghan McIntyre. Meaghan will be helping us sell advertising on the site and in the newsletter in her spare time after work at her regular job. Meaghan can be reached by calling 905-386-6609 or by
email .

And a welcome to Sara Taylor, REMT of Taylor Equine Massage Therapy to our team as a contributor to the
Ask Us section of the newsletter and website. Send us your questions, we'll find the answers.

There is so much happening with the spring upon us, it is tough keeping up with it all. So we ask, that you send us information for inclusion in the calendar of events, on the site and in the newsletter. The more you send in, the less time we have to spend finding the information and the more time we have to put together interesting stories and articles.

Don't forget to complete our survey. We have corrected the one question that didn't seem to make sense. So if you have completed the survey about helmet use, please complete it again to get that one question answered - it is an important question about your shopping habits at local tack stores.

And I think that is about all we have to say for this issue, so until next time....

Living the Dream: 4B Ranch Productions

 Wild West Show

From left to right: Mark Dobrindt, Tom Bishop Sr., Tom Bishop Jr., Sharron Whitty, Russ Vamplew

1889: "Buffalo Bill" Cody was mounted on a magnificent dappled grey horse of 15 1/2 hands and wore a pair of tight, fine leather riding boots up to his thighs & gauntlet gloves. In front of him about 30 feet walked a man who would toss a glass ball in the air every few yards each one shattered with a bullet and a roar from Buffalo Bill's gun. The crowd reacted with wild enthusiasm at the ease and remarkable showmanship of this statuesque figure. It is not hard to understand how such a startling event could leave a lasting impression on a youngster's mind, to remain there for a lifetime, and this was Thomas W. Bishop's first contact with the "Wild West".

This first vision of the "Wild West" was to one day become the 4B Ranch and enthuse the young lives of the Bishop family for generations to come.

Precious in round pen The Language of "Equus"

Have you ever wondered why when one horse flicks his tail, twitches an ear or throws his head, all the other horses go running? What does it mean when a horse turns his butt to you or another horse for that matter? This in part is the language of Equus.

Tom Shields and Anne Gage of Iron Horse Equestrian Centre will teach you this language at their clinic on Horsemanship on May 2nd.

Massage Therapy for the Sport Horse

    by Sara Taylor, REMT
By nature the horse is designed to be an athlete and, through breeding, humans have modified these athletes to go above and beyond what nature ever anticipated. We challenge our horses to move faster, jump higher and turn tighter corners all in the name of winning. This is where a dedicated sports massage therapist, with the guidance of your veterinarian, can be one of the best assets in your horse's medical team.
