03.31.09 Locals Employed in the Horse Industry Eager for New Season at Fort Erie Racetrack The announcement that Fort Erie Racetrack would indeed open after all for the 2009 thoroughbred racing season was welcomed with open arms by all involved in the horse industry, but especially those drawing their income from the track. With so much indecision about the future of the track last year and the viability of the economy, the news couldn't have come at a better time for some. And on March 20th, the thoroughbreds officially returned to the track with training starting in earnest a day or two later. Fort Erie Racetrack can house just over 1000 horses and has already received approximately 700 stall applications. May 2nd is the first race of the 112th season of racing at Fort Erie.
