Ontario's New Animal Protection Laws
ON March 1st, 2009, Ontario implemented new regulations to animal protection laws since 1919. In summary the act now establishes standards of care for all animals; increases fines up to $60,000, possibly up to 2 years of jail time and a possible lifetime ban of ownership; has created a specific offence for harming law enforcement animals. Further, there are new offences for causing or permitting distress to animals, veterinarians ar required to report suspected abuse and neglect, and the Ontario Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals (OSPCA) now has the right to inspect places where animals are kept for entertainment, exhibition, boarding, sale or hire, including zoos, pet shops and circuses without a warrant.
"Today is an historic day in animal welfare in our province. The Ontario government has clearly demonstrated their support for the life-saving work of the OSPCA. The society looks forward to working on behalf of Ontarians to address concerns for the well-being and humane treatment of all animals." OSPCA Chief Executive Officer, Kate MacDonald.
